We’re hiring: Industrial PhD Position in Energy System Optimization

ARCbcn is an engineering company based in Barcelona. We’re looking for a talented, entrepreneur, teamwork, and objective oriented person to join our team and contribute to our Research and Innovation Projects on energy engineering area: smart energy technologies & services, energy digitalization, energy efficiency, renewable energy technologies, smart buildings and smart grids.


Optimization of Energy Systems with a Focus on Sector Coupling, Thermal and Electrical Energy Storage

This doctoral research aims to develop an advanced optimization framework for energy systems, emphasizing sector coupling and the interrogation of thermal and electrical energy storage solutions. This research will merge key concepts from various optimization methodologies, including mathematical methods and data-driven artificial intelligence, particularly focusing on machine learning techniques. The project will explore the technical, economic, and emissions optimization of energy systems within the context of buildings and urban environments.


  • Design and implement optimization algorithms that enhance the efficiency of electrical and heating/cooling systems using machine learning and traditional mathematical approaches.
  • Analyze economic impacts and market strategies to maximize returns and support low-carbon initiatives.
  • Conduct experimental validations with industry partners to ensure the scalability and applicability of developed solutions.


Master’s degree or equivalent in Engineering or a related Science discipline.


High level of oral and written English, Spanish/Catalan are evaluated positively.

Preferable skills and motivations:

Master studies in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics or studies with a background in energy systems. Knowledge/ high interest in machine learning and optimization. Programming experience is required (Python is valued). Excellent communication skills are required. Knowledge of software for simulating energy systems (OpenModelica, TRNSYS) is valued. Previous participation in European R&D projects is a plus. Leadership and capacity for teamwork are required.
